Schnittke en Lassus

Dit concert brengt twee benaderingen van boete samen, gescheiden door vier eeuwen. In de eerste twee boetepsalmen van Orlandus Lassus klinkt berouw als een ordelijk, liturgisch proces. De muziek volgt nauwgezet de psalmverzen en mondt telkens uit in het Gloria Patri. De polyfonie van Lassus is ingetogen en evenwichtig, gericht op concentratie en verstilling, en nodigt uit tot aandachtig luisteren zonder theatrale uitvergroting.

In Alfred Schnittkes Psalms of Repentance verschuift de nadruk naar de innerlijke worsteling van het individu. De anonieme Russische boeteverzen uit de zestiende eeuw krijgen een uitgesproken expressieve toonzetting, met scherpe dissonanten en abrupte contrasten die de luisteraar een andere wereld binnenvoeren. Hier klinkt boete als existentiële noodzaak: rauw, confronterend en soms bijna onontkoombaar.
